Tributes to members passed

ROGER CROOK

Foundation Member Roger Crooke passed at 6am today (28 January 2020), fittingly on a meeting day of his beloved Bloke’s Lounge.

Roger was with us from the early days when a few of us met for a barbie and chat at Arthur Park in Broadbeach Waters. He was a staunch advocate of the Lounge and helped shape our values and the unwritten principles that continue to guide us.

His working background was chiefly in air filtration for more than 40 years: he claimed to be an expert because he’d been releasing air all his life!

Roger - aka Wombat - was a good-humoured man who had ideas and opinions and was not afraid to express them, but did not belittle people. He loved reading, model ship building and TV sport “Love ’em all,” he said, “… even synchronised swimming.”

Roger was also a keen angler, joining our lads as we explored all the empty fishing holes on the Gold Coast. He looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Woodgate, but was disappointed late last year when he was turned back on the only road in, blocked by bushfires.

He also embraced our dart sessions, leading the laughs and giving as many serves as he got. When health issues stopped him throwing, he happily took on the role of scorer, with added commentary which often brought games to a hilarious halt.

Roger Crook was a good mate to many. He will be sadly missed.

Our deepest condolences to his wife, Linda, and family.

KEVIN HAWKINS

Kevin Hawkins passed away on January 3 2019.

He was an affable bloke with a cheeky smile who loved life and a laugh.

Kevin joined in November 2015 but as his health deteriorated he was not able to do many activities.  However, the activities coordinators for darts, BBQ and fishing all kept him on their lists and he was appreciative of that as he was able to know how they were going.

Kevin was the only person in the fishing group who managed to catch the Gold Coast Seaworld boat, but unfortunately it was one that got away.

He will be fondly remembered

NEILL URE

It is with sadness that I advise that Neill Ure (pictured far right with Foundation Secretary Vince Paino at the 2015 Xmas in July BBQ) died in late October 2017.

Neill was one of our Founding Members, joining our rag-tag mob for barbeques in Albert Park. He was a gentle and quiet man, full of wisdom and encouragement as we strove to find our feet, for which I, for one, am grateful.

Neill had  a great sense of humour, often shown when he was enjoying a wine and calamari at lunch after meetings at the Italio-Australian Bowls Club. Alas, ailing health meant Neill's attendance waned. He did try to join us at the Golf Club, but its lack of accessibility for people with mobility issues prevented that. Neill will be missed. Vale, old mate.

RON HESLOP

Foundation member Ron Heslop passed away in November 2016, the first Lounge member to do so.

Ron will be remembered as a quite and gentle man who lovingly cared for his wife and family. His calling was as a General Practitioner, caring for his community, later turning his hand to avocado farming at Mt Tamborine.

He was a wise soul – and a good listener - and I appreciated his sage advice on many occasions.

Ron had broad interests including wine and food, photography, NRL, EPL soccer, native wildlife preservation and the politics of euthanasia. He cycled regularly and enjoyed his Friday night footy sessions with his good mate and Lounge President Ian Begaud.

Ron first joined in - eagerly - with our early barbeques at Albert Park, Broadbeach Waters. While he did not participate fully in activities due to health issues, he was a regular attendee at our outings and fortnightly meetings and loved a feed, beer and a chat afterwards.

Ron will be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his family.
