GC Sporting Hall of Fame
Eight blokes were in the starting line-up for the Sporting Hall of Fame visit on Monday 15 April. All were impressed by the honour rolls and memorabilia – especially from local sports stars whom most of us didn’t know were local sports stars - and the sense of history the displays engendered.
The Olympic Room was the golden attraction. Mein host, sports nut and hall stalwart Wayne Hickson told us it was the only official Olympic Room outside the MCG.
“Many organisations have displays which feature some Olympic material, but ours is an official display,” Wayne said. “It took some doing to get Australian Olympic Committee endorsement but the effort was well worth it.” Commonwealth Games and other international level achievers also feature.
The cliff-hanger US Masters win by Adam Scott – his idol and mentor Greg Norman, or any other Aussie, didn’t win thattie - will have him high on the contender stakes for GC Sportsperson of the Year. It’s doubtful the hall will ever get his green blazer but maybe now he’s got The Big One there may be some hope of snaffling his Australian Open yellow one!
We also visited the neighbouring hall featuring local newspaper history, including the press used to print the Southern Coast Bulletin, the forerunner to today’s Bully.
