GC Seniors Roundtable - June 26 meeting
Marianne Gevers, Gold Coast Seniors Regional Roundtable chair, gave us some background on the organisation, which evolved into a single entity after nearly two decades from three separate similar-member-and-ideals groups. Its members are representatives of the many local groups working on the ground with older people. Roundtable members developed the Gold Coast’s first Seniors Action Plan.
Its core role, however, is to provide a forum for the exchange about services available to seniors, overcoming hurdles, identifying funding sources and encouraging cooperation among members. With the withdrawal of government support, Volunteering Gold Coast stepped up to provide the secretarial role and a meeting venue.
Marianne has invited the Lounge to nominate someone to attend monthly meetings to update them on Lounge doings and to bring relevant information back to our members.
It’s a great way to promote our mob – we’ll call for nominations at the general meeting.
Roundtable stalwart Tracey Douglas also gave us a rundown on Connect The Coast, a non-profit organisation working to address social isolation by bringing people together, helping them access health and recreational services, providing a transport service and assisting associations such as ours.
Marianne is also a Queensland and national representative on the Alzheimer’s Australia board.
Tracey is deputy chair of Older People Speak Out (OPSO), an all-volunteer group of retired and semi-retired professionals who advocate on behalf of Australians aged over 50.
This year, Seniors Week will be held from 17-25 August
