Liz Rashid, from the Queensland Bowel Cancer Screening program, gave an enlightening talk on the risk, symptoms and - most importantly - prevention of bowel cancer. Liz left some brochures which are available to those who couldn't make it but, in summary:
One in 12 Australians will develop bowel cancer by the age of 85. Most bowel cancers are a cancerous growth that develops on the bowel wall.
RISK FACTORS
The risk of developing bowel cancer increases if you are.
Over 50 years old.
Have a family history of bowel cancer
Have a unhealthy lifestyle lack of exercise, poor diet.
Are obese or overweight.
High level of alcohol consumption or smoke.
SYMPTOMS
Bleeding from the bowel
Changes to normal bowel habits eg constipation, diarrhoea, rapid weight loss
Cramping or abdominal pain.
Weakness or tiredness
PREVENTION
Maintain a healthy body weight
Exercise every day for 30mins
Eat a varied diet of high fibre and low fats
Limit alcohol and quit smoking
Participate in the Bowel cancer screening program
